Interested in learning a little bit about birding? Hummingbirds are a great way to start! Consider signing up for the Hummingbird Festival.
New River Hummingbird Festival
August 13, 8am-12pm
Honeysuckle Hill Gardens, in Oak Hill.
Join one of Discover magazines "50 Best Brains in Science," internationally known hummingbird expert Dr. Bill Hilton Jr. for an up-close, hands-on experience with Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Hilton will capture, band, and release hummingbirds while explaining the secrets of their feeding, nesting, and migration behavior. He will talk about results of his years of work with ruby-throats in Central America and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers about hummingbirds, including how to design a habitat to attract these tiny birds to your back yard or school grounds.
Admission is $10 per person, or register and prepay online for 50 to 100% off youth admission. Proceeds go to the 501C3 Fayette County Education Fund to provide youth environmental education.
Online registration for both events will open by June 13 on birding-wv.com.
